EGM coming soon!

The Chess Association EGM is just around the corner. This Thursday, 10 Mar, 1-2pm we will be holding an Extraordinary General Meeting in order to elect the committee for 2005. The meeting will be held at the regular meet-up spot: Room G01, Engineering Building 33.

We need everyone to turn up, as if we don't have enough members present, it'll make trouble for us with Clubs & Societies. The existence of the club may be jeopardised!

Anyhow, positions to be elected are:

  1. President
  2. Vice-President
  3. Secretary
  4. Treasurer
  5. Activities officer

Committee will be elected by nomiation, and where there is more than one nominee, the candidate will be elected by show of hands. Being on committee will be an interesting and worthwhile experience, so I encourge all of you to accept if you are nominated. It also looks very good on your CV.

Unfortuantely, we won't be able to provide food at the EGM, as the association has no available funds at the moment. However, once we have our committee, we might be able to organise food and drinks for future club events.

OC Day 2

Day two at the Monash Orientation Carinval (yesterday) was also great. Although we didn't sign up as many people as on the Wednesday, more people sat down to play chess and have fun.

A few people that used the frequent the old Monash Univeristy Chess club made an appearance, and seemed glad that Monash Univeristy had a Chess organisation again.

Later in the day, Monash International approached MUCA with a possible sponsorship offer if we can organise events that would improve relationships between local students and international students.

All in all, it was another successful day.

Just a reminder to all members: MUCA will not be meeting on Tues 1 Mar in G01/33, as we will be at the OC stall for Day 3.

OC Day 1

The first day of the Orientation Carnival was a big success! We had over 50 people sign up to MUCA, ranging from people interested in learning the game, to pretty darn good players - much better than me anyhow. A fun day was had by all members manning the stall, and many games of chess were had by all. Highlights of the day included ex-prez Shankar playing 1 minute blitz chess while wearing the Amnesty International candle costume, S Urban's thorough thrashing of almost everybody - myself very much included.

There was a lot of interest, and if today was any indication, tomorrow will also be quite busy.

Big mistake of the day: Having http://monashchess.blogspot.org as the blog URL instead of http://monashchess.blogspot.com on all the flier/handouts. Doh!

The Orientation Carnival is here! We will be holding a stall on all three days, Wednesday 23 Feb, Thursday 24 Feb, and Tuesday 1 Mar. Look for two giant chess pieces and a demonstration board at Monash University (Clayton). Sign up now, it's FREE.

We meet 1pm-2pm every Tuesday and Thursday of semester, and our first session will be Thursday 3 Mar. We'll be in Tutorial Room G01 in Engineering Building 33. See you there!
